A Woman of God

Day Thirty-One: To Be a Woman of God

Ecclesiastes 12; 1 Peter 2 and 3; 1 Timothy 2; Titus 2

Looking through a series of women from scripture (or two) can do so much to build our confidence about God’s love and caring for us.

Each woman brings a warning or an encouragement that we can use to shape the woman of God each of us will be.

For our last lesson, let’s bring it all back together.

In Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 we are told that the conclusion, when all has been heard, is “fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person”. The chapter covers talking to the young (Eccl. 12:1) and to the older (Eccl. 12:6).

God created us to reach for Him (Acts 17:27). This is what you were made for. Men and women were created to bring glory to God by obedience to His will.

So, how exactly does God want you to glorify Him, as a woman?

Women are to lift up holy hands by dressing in clothing that is modest and discreet and by doing good works that are “proper for women making a claim to godliness” (1 Tim. 2:8-10). They are to be able to accept teaching with submissiveness and be careful not to exert authority over men (1 Tim. 2:12, 1 Cor. 11:1-3).

This is a woman who dresses in a way that reflects the meek and quiet spirit that has inside.

In 1 Peter 3:1 Wives are told to do “likewise”. This means that wives are supposed to do something in the same way as what was discussed before. In 1 Peter 2 there are several things taught:

  • Keep behavior excellent so that when evildoers slander what you do it will actually bring glory to God (1 Pet. 2:11-12)
  • Submit to the authority God has given to any government (1 Pet. 2:13-16)
  • Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, and honor the king (1 Pet. 2:17)
  • Be submissive to masters showing respect, whether they are good or unreasonable (1 Pet. 2:18)
  • Follow Christ’s example of doing right even while being treated poorly (1 Pet. 2:21-25)

So, when we get to 1 Peter 3:1, wives are to be submissive to their husbands in the same way they submit to the government and masters. They are to show honor to their husbands as they would to all people. And their behavior is to be such that it might win their unbelieving husband over to the truth (1 Pet. 3:1-2).

A woman of God is to be beautiful on the inside. The outward adorning is not to be the focus. Instead, what is chosen for the outside is meant to reflect was on the inside. Our beauty begins within. If you are not beautiful inside, you will not be beautiful outside. Focus on this aspect of your beauty and you will shine!

There is a great “recipe” for success as a Christian given in 2 Peter 1:2-11.

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.”

For the reason of having escaped the corruption that is in the world GIVE ALL DILIGENCE

        Add to FAITH VIRTUE

        Add to virtue KNOWLEDGE

        Add to knowledge SELF-CONTROL

        Add to self-control PERSEVERANCE

        Add to perseverance GODLINESS

        Add to godliness BROTHERLY KINDNESS

        Add to brotherly kindness LOVE

IF these are yours and ABOUND you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He who LACKS these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed of his old sins.

If you DO these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom!

That’s a recipe God gave for living a life that will take you into the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

That’s the basics of being a Christian woman. If you are also going to be a married Christian woman, as we discussed in the last lesson, there will be things that you need to learn (Titus 2:3-5).

To be a godly woman is a hard job! Paul says in 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 that being unmarried and focusing on obeying the Lord is concern enough, and it is a blessing to focus only on serving Him.

Being married is a good thing too, but it forces one to care about worldly things in addition to spiritual things.

The glorious thing is that God has given each of us what we need to get through it all (1 Pet. 1:3)! Older women teaching younger women these things through the generations will give a strong foundation for godly women for years to come.

Take your place among them and be a woman of God. Approach His throne with confidence (Heb. 4:16) knowing that He inspired the written scriptures as much for your benefit as for anyone else.

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” (Prov. 31:30). Amen.
