Verses 1-2 Cain (meaning “acquire”) and Abel (meaning “Breath” or “Nothing”) are born to Adam and Eve.
Verses 3-4 Cain brings an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord, and Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord respected Abel and his offering.
Verse 5 Cain is angry by God’s acceptance of Abel’s offering.
Verse 7 God tells Cain that if he does as he should that he will do well. But if not, sin lies at his door and he should rule over the desire for it.
Verse 8 Cain murders Abel.
Verses 9-10 God tells Cain that He knows what Cain has done to his brother.
Verses 11-12 God punishes Cain
Verse 15 God protects Cain
Verses 16-24 Cain’s family in the land of Nod
Verses 25-26 Adam and Eve have another son, Seth, who is appointed to take Abel’s place in the lineage.
