Respect for All Authority
Having respect for authority. It’s something we easily do in some instances and something we fight in others. It’s having a respect for all authority that we truly need to learn.
One of my favorite stories in scripture is in Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:1-10. These passages relate the story of a Roman Centurion’s servant being healed by Jesus. Through the course of the event, Jesus marvels at the centurion’s faith. His great faith was revealed because of his understanding of Jesus’ authority. The centurion understood that he was under the authority of others and that he had been given authority over soldiers under him. He recognized that Jesus had authority over all – even the illness tormenting his servant. All Jesus needed to do was to say “Go” to the disease and it would go! The centurion recognized how great Jesus’ authority truly is. Jesus commented that this was something that Israel did not understand, despite all of the preparation given to the nation for His coming. This Roman Centurion understood not just that Jesus did great things, but HOW He did great things.
We all need to remember that we are ALWAYS under someone else’s authority. God is the supreme authority. Jesus is Lord and the Head of the church. God has put ALL things under subjection to Jesus. From there, the authority just gets delegated down the pipe – husbands, employers, governments, elders, parents and on and on. Understanding how those authorities function UNDER the authority of God will help us to better understand how we are to submit to them and the beauty of the structure these relationships create for our lives.
