I mention quite often in my studies that learning what the names mean of the people and places in the Bible can be very helpful in your study of God’s Word.  In many instances, God makes a point of a given person’s name.  If He names them, as with Abram, Israel, Jesus, John the Baptist, it’s for a reason.  Knowing that meaning can help us to understand things beyond the black and white words on the page.  So, for your further study I offer this information.  Some of it is included in “To Be a Handmaid of the Lord” already, as it pertains to each study there.  Adding it to the stories covered in “Making it Simple”, will just enhance the threads being learned.

ADAM – the first Man, created by God (Gen. 1:26-27; 2:7). Name means “man” or “red earth”(click here to see the original Hebrew word and definitionclick here to see the original Greek word and definition)

EVE – the first Woman, created by God (Gen. 1:27; 2:18-25). Name means “life”, “living”, (click here to see the original Hebrew word and its definitionclick here to see the original Greek word and its definition).  She was named by Adam (Gen. 3:20)

EDEN – the garden God created for the first man and woman to live in (Gen. 2:8). Name means “pleasure” (click here to see the original Hebrew word and its definition)

CAIN – first son of Adam and Eve (Gen. 4:1). Name means “possession” (click here to see the original Hebrew word and its definitionClick here to see the original Greek word and its definition). Eve tells us what she meant by naming him “Cain” when she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.” (Gen. 4:1)

ABEL – second son of Adam and Eve, murdered by older brother Cain (Gen. 4:2, 8). Name means “breath”, “breathing”, “vanity (that is transitory)” (Click here to see the original Hebrew word and its definitionClick here to see the original Greek word and its definition).

SETH – third son of Adam and Eve, born after Abel’s death (Gen. 4:25-26). Name means “compensation” (click here to see the original Hebrew word and its definitionclick here to see the original Greek word and its definition).  Again, Eve tells what she was thinking of in naming her son, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him.” (Gen. 4:25)
