Two Chosen Mothers

Lesson 19 from To Be a Handmaid of the Lord

 Two Chosen Mothers

 Elizabeth and Mary

These two women are at opposite ends of the stages of life:
Mary is young and unmarried, while Elizabeth is older, married for many years, and past child bearing.
Yet both have their devotion to the Lord noted in Scripture!
Of Elizabeth and her husband Zacharias the scriptures record,
“They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.” (Luke 1:6)
Of Mary we read,
“And coming in, he said to her, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.” (Luke 1:28-30)
What worthy examples for each one of us to strive to imitate – no matter which stage of life we are in ourselves.
Worshiping God is not a YOUNG thing, nor is it reserved for the OLDER.  Living a FULL life in SERVICE to Him is always something we can achieve.  We simply have to set our minds to it (Romans 12:1-2; Psalm 96:9; John 4:23).
Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem as the customs of the law dictated.  This took preparation to pull off.  It was not a simple, last minute trip – as is seen when they make the trip when she is 9 months pregnant! How much preparation do we put into our service on Sunday mornings? How much thought did we give to having things ready, lessons done, and our minds prepared to serve the Lord? Most of us have the luxury of getting out of bed, dressing, and going to our cars to get us to worship in a short amount of time. Anyone – age 14 or age 54 can follow Mary’s example and PREPARE for serving the Lord. It starts with knowing what He asks of you – which means opening your Bible and studying. Show that worship is important to you, as it was to Mary and Joseph.
Both women were called “Blessed” because of God’s choosing them for motherhood.  Motherhood is a special thing. Even more so, these two women were special because of their deep faith in God. This faith is why God chose them for this work. Elizabeth was not the only older Jewish woman who had not had children.  Mary was not the only virgin Jewish girl. The Lord God chose them. Each woman would do well to build their own faith by imitating how these two women obeyed the Lord.
They weren’t “saints” as the world today uses the word, just godly, faithful women – but what WONDERFUL WOMEN.
I pray that every young lady would strive to be like Mary, and I pray that every woman strives to be like Elizabeth.  Don’t dismiss your “timeliness” to serve due to your youth or being older.
God has work for ALL of you!
